Little Black Hair Book – Released!

Monday, the 14th of September was a big day for both Janice Deul and myself. Our book has finally been released, and is ready to be sold in bookstores and online! Hurray!

Although we did a lot of preparations, the day itself was still quite hectic, and nerves were kicking in. Janice is more used to being in the livedealercasino public eye, and, more important, seems to enjoy it in a way. Me however, I love the attention that the book is receiving, but need to collect myself to climb a stage. So Monday was quite a big thing for me. And we were so honered that succefull singer Sabrina Starke was willing to hand out the first print of our book.

But we did well, if I may say so. And wow, what a party it was.

AFWL 2015 part II

As the first day, of the 5th edition of the Africa Fashion Week London 2015 has finished, I am getting ready to see some London, and more Fashion and fabulous afro hair on day II.

Africa Fashion Week London

For visitors of ‘traditional Fashion Weeks around the world, you would have to adjust your expectations a bit. Although it is obviously a big production, and a long list of young designers that show their talent on the catwalk, it has a less ‘posh’, VIP-feel to it, compared to what you are probably used to. No goody bags to get you excited, no well-known actresses, or musician’s fighting for their spot on the front row, but is that a reason not to go? No.

There are lot’s of stands with products made of African Printed material, African inspired jewelry, bags and hair care products by Motions are well represented. And there is soul-food!

Amandla Stenberg: Don’t Cash Crop On My Cornrows

I just love this video and just had to share it with you. The Hunger Game’s 16-year-old Amandla Stenberg delivers a crash course on black culture with a fellow classmate for their history class. Her observance is not only very sharp and on point, but very well expressed. Is she really only 16?!

Watch and learn.

The Hair Secrets of Dutch Afro’s

Going natural is currently one of the hottest trends in hair looks. Dutch celebs, as Sylvana Simons, and Hollywood VIPs alike, such as Solange Knowles and Lupita Nyong’o, the queen of the Teeny Weeny Fro (TWA), are part of a trend that has been going strong for a while.

While the wave of natural hair wearers has grown greatly in recent years, looks on the streets are still dominated by weaves, chemically treated hair, and straight hair styles. Is how one chooses their hair look just a matter of personal style or preference, or is there more to it?

Solange & ELEVENPARIS

Last year at the ‘Modefabriek’ (Dutch fashion fair) I fell in love with a sweater by I brand I had never heard of. It was called ElevenParis and the sweater  had Cara Delevingne printed all over.  But this brand has been active from 2003, I just missed out.

This year, there was some news on that same brand. They signed my favorite nappy headed (joke) model. Solange!

SolangeWhile the fashion industry is still somewhat behind when it comes to signing models of color, and less then 10% of the models during the NY Fashion week last year, and while there are still very view black models seen with natural afro hair, ElevenParis chose for Solange to represent their brand.
