Solange & ELEVENPARIS

Last year at the ‘Modefabriek’ (Dutch fashion fair) I fell in love with a sweater by I brand I had never heard of. It was called ElevenParis and the sweater  had Cara Delevingne printed all over.  But this brand has been active from 2003, I just missed out.

This year, there was some news on that same brand. They signed my favorite nappy headed (joke) model. Solange!

SolangeWhile the fashion industry is still somewhat behind when it comes to signing models of color, and less then 10% of the models during the NY Fashion week last year, and while there are still very view black models seen with natural afro hair, ElevenParis chose for Solange to represent their brand.

Utah State Afro?

Basketball Afro

We see more and more naturals on the streets, on the television, the music industry and in Movies. But we have not seen a fro like this on the basketball court. We are talking about 19 years of Jalen Moore. An upcoming talent who is playing for Utah State. Yes, everybody is talking about his growing skills on the field, and him promising carrier, but his hair is also pokies online for real money quite a subject!

“It’s fun to be a little different,” Moore said. “It’s nice to be known for something other than your game. … I have no plans on cutting it anytime soon.”

Moore started growing his 1970s-style hair about three years ago, when he attended Sky View High in Smithfield, because “I just didn’t think I looked good with it shorter.”

And we love it! But it doesn’t stop there.

R.I.P. Titi Cree Branch

Titi

Titi Branch, one of the co-founders of the wildly successful natural hair care line, Miss Jessie’s, died Dec. 4 All over the internet we can read that it was an apparent suicide but there was no independent confirmation of that. A graduate of the University of Maryland, she was 45. With her sister Miko, Branch ran a New York salon. Tweets from Miko and the Miss Jessie’s Twitter account appeared to be small tributes to the fallen entrepreneur.

Miss Jessie’s was one of the first major hair care lines to grace the shelves of Target in the new wave of natural hair enthusiasm. In the mid-aughts, when the company was following the success of Carol’s Daughter, the long-time stalwart of natural hair products, it was still difficult to find many options for natural hair in mainstream stores.

Little Black Hair Book

It’s been a bit quiet on Sprottje.com, but behind the scene we’ve been working hard. The past view months, Janice Deul and I have been working on a secret project. But now that it’s been buzzing in the Dutch ‘Black Hair Scene’ it is time to spread the word.

Tatyana Ali talks HAIR!

Tatyana Ali opens up to VladTV about how she feels about people’s obsession with her hair, while chalking her nice tresses up to good health and her genes. The singer says that she wasn’t always so fond of her hair growing up, because she was singled out for it as a kid, which made her feel a certain type of way.

She then talks about Chris Rock’s “Good Hair” documentary and how she wished he would have reached out to her, because she wanted to tell a different side to his story. Tatyana says that children are affected by the term “good hair” in both negative and positive ways.
